Hey Urban Druids,
Sorry for the lag in posts. I recently moved from New York to Philadelphia. I wonder if you could see that coming considering that I was visiting so many Philly parks and restaurants!
You also wouldn’t be surprised to learn that I joined a Philadelphia based hiking meet up almost immediately. Back in March I teamed up with the Delaware Valley chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club to hike the Schuylkill River Trail. And in case you were wondering what that hike looked like in 30 degree weather, here is a video to give you a picture perfect idea:
The hike is simply put, a perfect escape for someone seeking refuge in a “natural” space who doesn’t have the time to take a day trip and/or doesn’t have a car to get out of the city. I say “natural” because you can still hear and sometimes see the cars whizzing by on the highway, but hey, let’s take what we can get! The trail is also flat and you can easily do it in short bursts. We started our hike in Manayunk and hiked for approximately two hours. This is only a small section of the trail, but it’s still a good work out.
Check out our route:
But that’s just part of the trail. The entire trail is 130 miles passing through several Philadelphia counties. In the future I plan to hike the trail in the other counties. The future being way before it’s ever 30 degree weather again!
For more information on the trail, including trail maps for other PA counties, check out the dedicated Schuylkill River Trail website!
